I am in love with vintage style. I love styles from the 50’s and 60’s the most, but vintage from any era can be made to look great today. There is a trick to dressing in vintage attire. You don’t want to look like you’re wearing a costume. You want to mix vintage clothing with styles of today to update the look a bit. If you’ve noticed, a lot of the styles from back it the day have come back around anyway so it’s not very hard to dress in a vintage style.
There are vintage shops popping up everywhere and you can even find shops online, but you don’t have to go to a vintage shop to find vintage items. There are vintage like items in shops everywhere. They’re just not called vintage items, because they’re back in style now.
Remember the large sunglasses worn by Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” or her Shift dress? The sunglasses are everywhere and the Shift dress is a staple in most women’s wardrobes and is one of those easy go-to dresses.
The Shift dress became popular in the 20’s, then gave way to the flapper dress in the 40’s and 50’s. The Shift dress made a strong come back in the late 60’s. This particular 60’s version was darted at the bust, going straight into a straight or a-line skirt with no shaping at the waist. Givenchy in particular made a few contributions to the shift’s legacy. He designed Audrey Hepburn’s iconic black dress in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
What about the high waist wide leg pants? They’re back in style. They were popular from the 1930’s till the 1950’s then again in the 1970’s. Now they’re back again. The kids today think that the styles are so new, but the styles just come back around again with a few changes to them. Today we have the Palazzo pants
Leggings have been around for a long time. They just keep changing the fabrics and styles. They now come in leather, sequin, with holes, without holes, different colors, embellished, etc. The leggings were made popular in the 80’s and continued through the 90’s. At that time they were outselling jeans. The legging craze went away for a while, but came back in 2005 and are a part of our everyday wardrobe today. They are worn in so many different ways now.
If you like vintage the way I do, you don’t have to look far and remember mix vintage with current styles to update the look.
